Business Smart: How Vontier Builds a Benefits-Rich Culture That Puts Employees First

North Carolina

Vontier has an impressive reputation for comprehensive, employee-centered benefits that are offered to more than 8,000 employees worldwide. As a leading global provider of critical technologies and connected solutions in the mobility ecosystem, putting people first has always been at the core of the company.

Gilbarco Veeder-Root, a Vontier company based in Greensboro, is a global leader for integrated retail and commercial fueling solutions. When Mark Morelli, president and CEO of Vontier, heard about the opportunity to become a Family Forward NC® Certified employer at a Greensboro Chamber of Commerce meeting, he was eager to begin the certification process. Gilbarco Veeder-Root employs approximately 1,000 people in Greensboro.

“We’re big advocates of the benefits we offer and as an active member of the Greensboro business community, it was a natural fit for Gilbarco Veeder-Root to become certified,” says Robin Eastham, benefits director at Vontier.

What makes Vontier’s approach to employee benefits stand out is how it addresses the diverse needs of its workforce.

“We want to be able to give our employees the tools they need to be successful — not just in their work, but in their life,” says Carin Stacy, vice president of total rewards at Vontier.  “Everyone has a different story and path, so it’s important to give people options.”

This philosophy has led Vontier to develop a comprehensive benefits package, designed to support employees at every stage of their life. A few examples:

  • For recent graduates: Student loan repayment assistance.
  • For growing families: Six weeks of paid parental leave for all parents and adoption assistance.
  • For caretakers: Two weeks of paid family care leave to care for ailing family members.

A big emphasis on health and wellness

Perhaps most impressive is Vontier’s approach to addressing the specific health needs of their workforce, which includes many employees who work with their hands and on their feet all day.

“Because many jobs are manually labor intensive, we have a lot of employees with musculoskeletal issues,” Eastham says. “We’ve partnered with Hinge Health, an online physical therapy app, that gives employees (and their dependents over 18) an opportunity to learn more about how to move, stretch and stay in shape.”

So far, 4.6% of the company has enrolled, above Hinge Health’s standard enrollment rate of 2.6%. Eastham has tracked a 44% average symptom reduction in the first 90 days of an employee using the app.

Emily Heuser, people and culture partner director at Gilbarco Veeder-Root, suffered from a joint injury last year and used the app for five months to recover.

“This app was so convenient and kept me accountable to do my exercises,” Heuser says. “Plus, I could add it into my workday and didn’t have to take the time to find an in-person physical therapist and drive back and forth to appointments. It helped with my mobility and I’m back to normal now.”

How to measure the success of the benefits program

Like many large employers, Vontier faces the challenge of managing benefits for a diverse workforce that includes union and non-union employees across multiple countries. That’s why Vontier takes a methodical approach to evaluating their benefits programs, reviewing them annually to ensure they remain competitive and effective.

“What are other companies doing? Is it cost-effective? Are we getting a return on our investment? These are just some of the questions we ask when analyzing our benefits,” Stacy says.

This strategic approach helps Vontier ensure its benefits meet employee needs while remaining sustainable for the business.

For companies considering similar investments in comprehensive benefits, Stacy says that investing in employees to stay healthy and maintain their health is the best way to improve the company’s bottom line.

“We want to promote health and wellness opportunities not just for our employees, but for their families,” Stacy says. “This helps with our company’s productivity because we’re reducing illnesses, absenteeism rates and medical claims. But most important: We want our employees to feel like they belong here, we care about them and want what’s best for them.”
