It now includes a new section to guide employers in becoming champions of public policy

Family-friendly workplace policies are no longer a perk, they are a necessity. They are proven to attract and retain a talented workforce, increase productivity and support the health and well-being of babies and young children.

Since we first published our Guide to Family Forward Workplaces in 2019, the landscape of workplace benefits, especially those that support parents and caregivers, have significantly changed. And there’s much more to do, starting with providing benefits to those working hourly jobs.

Our Guide to Family Forward Workplaces catalogs the most comprehensive list of policies that improve workplace productivity, recruitment and retention, and support children’s healthy development. We’ve updated the 19 policies where new research and outcomes are available. Several states have improved their public-sector benefits. Some new state laws have been enacted that require employers to provide benefits such as paid sick leave to employees.

The child care section is more robust and there are new inspiring case studies and updates to those we had already shared when employers have made significant changes to their policies. Case studies highlight employer benefits for each of the five categories of policies: paid leave, scheduling, accommodations, child care, and health and wellness.

Additionally, the Guide offers a new section that gives employers guidance to become champions for public policy. Employers have a critical stake in the well-being of their employees and families and their voice is powerful. Take the current national discussion on child care. Employers are weighing in and sharing the challenges of retaining their employees.

Business and nonprofit leaders, CEOs, human resource professionals, and employees can use this resource as a roadmap to create family-friendly workplaces. The Guide is designed for employers – big and small – to use in its entirety or by individual section to choose policies that best meet your needs.
In the Guide, you’ll find:

  • Evidence-based guidance on benefits that positively impact child health and well-being and provide a positive return on investment for employers
  • Details for each policy and positive outcomes
  • Sample policies and case studies from North Carolina employers who successfully implemented family-friendly policies (many more online)
  • Steps to get started when creating new policies or enhancing existing ones
